West Branch Somerville Library

Somerville, MA

Renovation, restoration, and expansion of the neo-classical Carnegie Library has re-established it as a centerpiece of the Davis Square neighborhood. The lighting concept creates a balance between historic and new with period appropriate lighting in the restored entry and historic reading rooms and more modern fixtures and details in the addition. The children’s space, located in a converted attic, features a slot fixture between the folded ceiling planes. This multi-layered lighting design creates a sense of height in an otherwise shallow space.  The addition created an opportunity for an exterior reading garden with outdoor illumination for special events and community gatherings, while respecting the surrounding residential neighborhood.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

This renovation and expansion allow for better access and enhanced operations and programming. All new and refurbished lighting fixtures are LED and energy efficient.
