New England College of Optometry, Clinical Training Center
Boston, MA
A former 4,500SF library near NECO’s historic Beacon Street campus has been renovated to accommodate the College’s new Clinical Training Center. The renovated facility features simulated clinical environments that support immersive, hands-on learning experiences for students. Dedicated classrooms and mock examination rooms provide opportunities for skill development, practice, and real-time instructor observation. The lighting design was carefully developed to support visual precision, comfort, and adaptability within simulated clinical environments. Layered ambient illumination provides consistent and uniform light levels throughout the training spaces, while linear lighting systems reinforce circulation paths and contribute to a bright, visually balanced environment. Special attention was given to vertical illumination and glare control within the mock examination rooms to enhance facial visibility and support clinical learning activities. The lighting design was also carefully calibrated to achieve very low light levels required during the practice eye examinations, with lighting individually controlled at each exam station to support flexibility and clinical accuracy. In classrooms and collaborative spaces, integrated luminous elements contribute to visual comfort, strengthen spatial identity, and create a cohesive lighting experience throughout the facility.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
The design aligns with NECO’s lighting and energy performance standards, creating a functional, efficient, and comfortable educational environment.
