University School

Shaker Heights, OH

This independent boys’ school spans two campuses in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. A 2019 campus master plan established a multiphase strategy for renovation and expansion while preserving the character of the original 1926 buildings and maintaining a cohesive campus identity. Subsequent projects include Chilcote Commons and a Middle School renovation and expansion project that supports contemporary academic programming.

The transformation of a former dining hall into Chilcote Commons introduced a versatile gathering space for family-style lunches, fairs, and community events. As part of the phased Middle School renovation and expansion, the lighting design delivers balanced horizontal and vertical illumination, with multiple lighting zones that allow flexibility for different learning activities and greater user control. Connecting corridors incorporate concealed LED cove lighting that gently washes the walls, creating a soft, welcoming transition between buildings. In classrooms, linear fixtures shift from recessed to suspended to help maximize perceived ceiling height. Exterior lighting was coordinated with the landscape architect to improve safety and visibility while maintaining code-compliant illumination levels. The historic building façade, positioned behind the new covered porch, is illuminated to highlight its architectural presence and establish an inviting arrival experience.
