Harvard Medical School, Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine

Boston, MA

As one of the largest medical libraries in the world, the phased renovation of the Countway Library has transformed the Brutalist building into the social center of the Harvard Medical School campus and reinforces the space as a modern-day Health Science & Medical Library. The lighting concept establishes a careful balance between electric and natural light, supporting views into and out of the Library. A reimaged first floor accommodates a café, bookstore, event room and maker space and creates a vibrant new entrance connecting the Library to the Longwood medical community.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

The renovation meets Harvard’s Green Building Standards for Healthy Materials, adheres to the Healthier Hospitals initiative for furniture, and supports the Library’s Healthcare Without Harm Initiative in furnishings and design.
