University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Education

Philadelphia, PA

SFIL provided interior and exterior lighting design for this $35.6M renovation and expansion project. The project connects two adjacent 1960s-era buildings with a 16,200 SF addition, creating new spaces for the Graduate School of Education, the Center for Global Education and Innovation and the McGraw Center for Educational Leadership. New and renovated spaces include a lobby, student lounge and breakout areas encouraging collaboration and innovation, faculty and staff offices and lounges, a makers space, AV/VR labs, executive classrooms, a donor space, and an expansive new events space. The lighting was designed to be vibrant and fresh accentuating the architecture and giving the illusion of high ceilings throughout. On the exterior, lighting was carefully designed with dark sky complaint fixtures maintaining recommended illumination levels. On the interior, a balance between aesthetics and appropriate levels of illumination was carefully achieved.
